Drew and Jonathan Scott Reveal the Decor Risks That Actually Pay Off
Plus, the bold choices they took in their own homes.
Tune into any episode of Property Brothers, and you'll notice we're not afraid of making unconventional design choices. But we don't make these daring decisions lightly. Too often, we see homeowners throw a bunch of different things together and hope for the best, but that's not going to cut it. Luckily, there are easy and effective ways to take risks with decor, and you don't even have to break the bank to do it.

1. Bold Color
Color is one of the easiest ways to go bold. In fact, you'll notice on Brother vs. Brother that the room that wins is most often the one that features a bold color choice. It makes a statement when you walk into a room and see a pop of color, but you want to make sure it's the right statement. We always recommend trying a vivid paint color because it's so simple to change if you end up not liking it or eventually grow tired of it. For example, the walls in Drew's master bedroom are black, and the entire space has a mix of dark tones. Although many people say you can't do black in the bedroom, we totally disagree. The hue definitely sets the mood, while colorful decor makes it a little more lively.

2. Interesting Accents
We also love making a statement by designing around a conversation piece. Jonathan designed an incredible feature shelf that stands floor-to-ceiling for the living room in his Las Vegas home. It holds collectibles from our travels and little pieces of memorabilia, and we just love that all the items can be on display. There's also a giant, oversized crystal chandelier in the living area of that house. The ceilings are 26-feet high, and it fills the space. It's certainly eye-catching, but it's also very elegant. For your own home, incorporate a few prominent pieces, like the navy and gold tabletop decor in our Kohl's line, that look beautiful displayed on a table or shelf.

3. Two-Tone Cabinetry
We do want to warn people: You need to be very careful when it comes to emboldening certain items in your home, including counters and floors. If you decide to go really adventurous with these, they're incredibly expensive to change—and that's not something you want to be doing every ten years. We tend to go a little more neutral on the expensive items, then use other items to pop in and make a statement. Although they can be pricey to update, you could be a little adventurous and go for two-tone cabinets. It doesn't cost any extra to add in a second shade.
No matter how you decide to go against the grain, make sure you have something that ties everything together, whether it's a color scheme, pattern, or finish.
